This map shows Llyn Nant-y-moch covers some 600 acres and is actually a reservoir that was created for power generation in 1964. It is stocked with varieties of trout and permits for fishing can be bought from the Rheidol Filling Station in Ponterwyd. The stunning scenery of the Vale of Rheidol is well worth exploring with it's lush dense woodland in the upper valley and fantastic waterfalls leading down the Rheidol Valley to the sea. There are cycle trails and walks in the Rheidol Valley some of which start in the town of Aberystwyth. The cycle route leads you through the lower Rheidol Valley to Devil's Bridge, mainly along quiet back roads and dedicated cycle routes. The majority of the route is classed as moderate but there is a very steep climb up from the valley floor to Devil's Bridge. There is an alternative to walking or cycling however. The Vale of Rheidol Railway, a narrow gauge steam train built at the turn of the last century that departs from the train station in the centre of Aberystwyth and continues for 11¾ miles until it reaches Devil's Bridge. On the hour-long journey passengers have spectacular views of the wooded Rheidol Valley and at Devil's bridge there are walks to Mynach Falls, Devil's Punchbowl and Jacob's Ladder. Beware missing the last train however else you will have a long walk back to Aberystwyth. All trains normally wait 1 hour at Devils Bridge before returning, and, although you can catch a later train, if you need more time for sightseeing it is best to confirm last times with the guard. Mountain Bike enthusiasts are also well catered for in the Rheidol Valley with the Nant y Arian Forest Trails being located between the lower valley and the Nant y Moch reservoir. The Syfydrin (35km), Summit (16km), and Pendam (9km) trails use twisting all weather tracks carved into the steep valleys and ridges of the forest to create challenging routes for even the more experienced Mountain Bikers. |
