Benllech is
a seaside resort on the east coast of Anglesey
North Wales. With it's golden
sands a clear blue sea and safe beach
area Benllech is popular for traditional family holidays. The town itself
is quite small (population 2,340) with many residents having retired
to the town after spending many happy holidays in Benllech.
Much of the town straddles the A5025 east coast Anglesey road, as indeed
does the shopping centre. Although there are no large chain stores there
is a number of supermarkets and a variety of shops supplying the needs
of visitors and locals alike. However one does not visit Benllech for
the shopping.
The beautiful Anglesey countryside and glorious beaches
ensure visitors return year after year. Children are happy to while away
their holidays on Benllech's famous beach. Beach rangers patrol the beach
in the summer months and organised games offer other options to the
kids than crabbing, rock pooling and paddling in the sea.
For those who
require more strenuous activities Benllech beach is popular for sea canoeing
and surfing. And the close proximity of the Anglesey Coastal Path offers
opportunities for some of the best coastline walks in Wales and the UK.
My favourite walk is in the south easterly direction toward Penmon. This
walk takes one past the St
Davids Park campsite toward Red Wharf Bay.
This is a fantastic bay with miles of sands and an abundance of places
to explore. Across the wide bay is the beach at Llanddona, but care must
be taken before setting out across the Red Wharf sands. Unless you are
sure of the tides and your ability to move fast it is advisable to take
the long way round, keeping to the upper shore line. But saying that
it would be a shame to miss the wide variety of wildlife especially the
abundance of cockles, and razor shells. I found a clam shell as big as
two fat fists.
Should just talking about all this walking tire you out
then fear not as Benllech also offers the opportunity to just relax
and chill out. Spend a day relaxing on the beach, the small promenade
offers a cafe and souvenir shop, ice cream kiosks, a car park and toilet
facilities. All you need for a typical British seaside holiday.
