Capel
Garmon
is renowned for the neolithic
burial chamber
that
is located on the outskirts of the village. Located high above the Conwy
Valley and the popular inland resort of Betws
y Coed, the village offers a single pub and restaurant and marvelous
views of the Conwy Valley and Snowdonia. The village is well worth
a visit if only for the delightful views from the winding country lanes.
The old chapel in the village also offers a prime viewing spot for
the late residents of Capel Garmon with tombstones placed looking out
across the Conwy Valley. They are indeed "tombs with a view".
The old chapel at Capel Garmon was originally a "chapel of ease"
to Llanrwst, the market town in the valley
below. The church served the area of Garth Garmon and Tybrith Uchaf, and
Capel Garmon did not become a separate parish until 1927. There have been
a number of churches on this site since early times and the present building
was consecrated on 11 November 1862 but it is now in a dilapidated condition
and sadly was closed some years ago.
I know no more about Capel Garmon other than that the great grandmother
of my wife ( Eira Wyn ) lived in the village many years ago.
Directions :
Leave Betws y Coed on the A5 travelling north to Conwy. Turn right after
a few hundred yards at sign pointing to Capel Garmon. Follow the narrow
and very steep road to Capel Garmon (approx 1.5 miles).
Should you be based in Betws y Coed there is a path leading up toward
Capel Garmon from near the Waterloo Bridge. Alternatively you could cycle
up the hill as per directions above. Both the last two alternatives are
preferable to driving there by car as it is a lovely walk or cycle ride,
especially the down hill return !.
